History
Land Heritage was founded in 1984, through the vision and foresight of Hugh Flatt, a Somerset farmer with 100 acres in the Brendon Hills. Hugh’s belief was in the viability of a mixed farm, with its diversity of enterprises built upon a foundation of true husbandry. The care and protection of the health of the soil and the stewardship of the land and its indigenous livestock was paramount and recognised the essential part the small farm plays in the stability of the countryside and the local economy. This strong belief had been nurtured through the establishment of a land-owning Industrial Provident Society in Somerset and Devon known as Lipson Lake Limited, first set up in the 1950's. This was an association of a group of friends, belonging to various Christian denominations, whose raison d'etre was the establishment and management of farms according to the fundamental principles for the protection of the environment through sustainable practice, which resulted in the production of high quality wholesome food. The Society became known as Land Heritage.
